stvn girard (born Steven Girard) has an intradisciplinary approach to performance art. His works take the form of performance, body art, photo, video performance and installaction, and investigate disciplinary continuation and the subjective historicization of performance art. By way of lengthy speculative processes of necromancy-haunting-possession anchored in archival research and field research, he celebrates the forms, gestures, and artists that have marked him and who make up the discipline. The methodology he uses to do this refers to the citationist gesture of the retro-avant-garde or tribute, both based on a conception of art as a process of proximity, friendship, and underground networks. From a broader perspective, his activities as an organizer, theorist, critic and artist all converge toward achieving a disciplinary contribution to performance art. This approach takes shape through reconduction, haunting, quotation, translation, and infiltrating différance in hopes of translating an aesthetic and disciplinary language shaped by the artist’s encounters.
