Wathiq Gzar Al-Ameri studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, specializing in painting. After graduating in 1994, he left Iraq and embarked on a long journey that led him to Switzerland, where he once again pursued his studies in art. After graduating in 2002, his interest shifted towards performance art. Since then, he has participated in numerous festivals in Europe, Asia, and America. In 2011, he won the Performance Art Award Switzerland and the prestigious Swiss Art Award in 2012.
Wathiq uses space, body, and material to connect with the audience on an emotional level. His performances, embodiments of resilience and resistance, reflect on past and current international events, and explore themes such as war, border crisis, national identity, and classism.
Wathiq’s participation is supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.
